New Montparnasse Tower: The 2030 Transformation Project

The "Black Monolith" is getting a makeover. After decades of criticism regarding its dark, oppressive appearance and energy inefficiency, the owners of the Montparnasse Tower launched an international competition to reinvent the skyscraper for the 21st century.

The Winning Design: Nouvelle AOM

The winning project, by the collective Nouvelle AOM, promises a radical transformation. The goal? To turn the tower from dark to light, from opaque to transparent.

Key Features of the New Tower

1. Transparency: The dark smoked glass will be replaced with clear glass, making the tower blend into the sky rather than blocking it.
2. Greening: The lower levels will feature "hanging gardens" and planted balconies. The podium at the base will be expanded with greenery, creating a park-like feel at street level.
3. The "Serre" (Greenhouse): Generally, the top floors (currently the terrace) will be heightened and converted into a massive agricultural greenhouse and viewing gallery.
4. Sustainability: The renovation aims to reduce energy consumption drastically, making it a model of eco-rehabilitation. It will produce some of its own energy.

When will it happen?

The project was originally aimed for the 2024 Olympics but has faced delays due to complexity, costs, and asbestos removal logistics. Construction is expected to proceed in phases, with a target completion closer to the late 2020s (possibly 2028-2030).

Impact on Visits
